Foundation Types Explained

Strip foundations are the traditional and most economical solution for most residential and light commercial buildings. These consist of continuous strips of concrete supporting load-bearing walls, typically 600mm wide and excavated to a depth where suitable bearing strata is found. They're ideal for stable ground conditions with good bearing capacity and are commonly used for house extensions, new builds, and garage constructions across South Wales.

Trench fill foundations provide an efficient alternative where deeper excavations are required due to poor near-surface ground conditions or high water tables. By filling the entire trench with concrete rather than building up from a traditional strip foundation, we reduce construction time and eliminate the need for extensive brickwork below ground level. This method is particularly effective in cohesive soils and areas with drainage challenges, providing a solid, stable base for your structure.

Raft foundations distribute building loads over a large area through a reinforced concrete slab covering the entire building footprint. They're essential for sites with poor or variable ground conditions, where individual strip or pad foundations would be uneconomical or structurally inadequate. Raft foundations are commonly specified for buildings on soft clay, made ground, or areas prone to ground movement, providing a floating platform that moves uniformly with any ground settlement.

Piled foundations transfer structural loads through weak surface soils down to stronger, more stable strata at depth. We install various piling systems including driven piles, bored piles, and mini-piles depending on site access, ground conditions, and structural requirements. Piled foundations are essential for heavy structures, sites with very poor ground conditions, and locations where excavation depth for traditional foundations would be excessive or impractical.
